Balsa Airplane Assignment

Intro:

This assignment was to build an airplane out of balsa wood and fly it. We were given a bag with all the parts to make the plane. We are doing this because it is part of our flight unit.

Building:

First I cut my pieces out of the 2 planks we were given and put together the plane. Then I glued the parts and engine in place. Lastly, I sanded it down to make it more aerodynamic and attached the wire to power the engine.

Materials

  • balsa wood
  • engine
  • wire
  • propeller
  • glue
  • elastic bands

Conclusion

What worked well for me was putting the plane together. It went relatively fast and was easy. something I would do differently is making a different type of plane for the challenge of making my own parts because I think that could be fun.

Rocket Building 101

Intro

This assignment was to build a model rocket and create fins and a nose cone on onshape. I am making this because my teacher told me to. I hoped to learn more about how rockets fly.

Nose Cone / Fins

I chose these designs because they looked the best in my mind. I did some research on the nose cone to see which would be the most aerodynamic and my design is pretty close to the one I saw online.

Building Phase

Center of gravity / Center of pressure

Flight

Conclusion

making my rocket was pretty easy. something that went wrong was that one of my fins broke after my first flight so I would do a better job gluing them next time. Something I would do differently is not use hot glue, hot glue is heavy and gives more drag.

Recipe

Cherry Pie

  • 2 cans (21 oz each) cherry pie filling
  • 1 teaspoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  1. Heat oven to 425°F.
  1. Spoon pie filling into crust-lined plate. Top with second crust; seal edge and flute. Brush top crust with milk; sprinkle with sugar. Cut slits in several places on top crust.

You make this pie by pouring in the cherry filling then bake it for 45 mins

Pinewood derby car

This assignment was to make your own pinewood derby car and race it. We were given a small box with a piece of wood wheels and nails. First, you cut your piece of wood into the shape that you wanted your car to be. Then you created your wheels in onshape and printed them. Lastly, you put more weight on your car and raced them.

What worked was putting the car together it was very easy and simple. What didn’t work well was my wheels were very wobbly so I edited them and added a hub to help stabilize them. Something I would change is the shape of my car, I think if I spent more time on it I could’ve found a more aerodynamic shape. I would also change the entire design of my wheels, they weren’t very well thought out and I could definitely make them better.

Simon says

This project was our introduction to electronics. We had to build a Simon says the game out of an Arduino and your electronic kits. Putting everything together was pretty easy I did it in about 1 class. The only thing that didn’t go well was one button (yellow) was grounded weirdly so that every time we started the game it thought the yellow button was being pressed. I didn’t struggle with anything for this project, everything went to plan

What I used: 4 Buttons, 4 LEDs, Buzzer, Jumper Wires, 5 10k Resistors, 4 1k Resistors

Bread Project

what worked: I was successful at making the bread so just about everything went well. Nothing really was that big of a problem the only thing that took a while needing the dough but it worked eventually. Something that I would change is making a different type of bread. white was very easy to make and I think that if it was a different type it would be more fun and challenging to make.

Conway’s Game of Life

The purpose of this assignment was to learn and get comfortable with soldering. we made a Conway game of life and connected all of them at the end to make a big colony. we learned about Conway’s game ( accidentally found a google easter egg) and got better at soldering.

What went well for me was soldering. I found it pretty simple and easy. When I was done soldering I tested my game with a battery pack and it worked. Nothing didn’t really work well for me so that was nice. I wouldn’t really change anything about this assignment I think it was helpful and got the job done.

Ispy

I spy with my little eye

1 soccer ball, 1 pokemon card, 1 calculator, 1 expo marker, 1 shark truck,1 silver car,1 Frisbie, 2 dice,1 plane, 1 shake,1 drill, 1 pair of safety glasses, P C D and I block, 1 mini hammer, 1 red paint tube, 1 cat front loader

Making this was pretty easy. All I did was set up the box and get random things from around the classroom and shop. I wanted everything to be well spaced out because I think it looks better like that. I had a wrinkle in the scrim so that was challenging to work with but we managed to figure it out.
